Check: Networking basics
Eleven questions on OSI, DNS, HTTP, TCP, NAT, DHCP, and diagnostics.
The module's final check. Eleven questions covering the track's lessons: OSI and TCP/IP, IP addresses and ports, DNS, HTTP and HTTPS, diagnostic tools, firewall and routing, TCP, ICMP, NAT and DHCP. After the questions comes a mini-project: a shop that won't open after a move. You'll need to fix it along the whole request path, from the port mapping to the proxy timeout.
Next in the course is the "Networking: advanced" module: TLS, certificates, reverse proxy, load balancing.
How it's graded
The lesson is marked complete when all eleven answers are correct. Get one wrong, click "Try again": as many attempts as you need.
Questions 2, 6 and 9 have commands you can use to check the answer yourself. They set the label
izi.lab=net14-quiz, limit memory, and remove what they created at the end. They don't touch anyone
else's containers. The output shown is from Docker Desktop on macOS; on Linux the addresses will differ.
Mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can do it by hand. A shop made of two containers, an nginx proxy and a Python api, stopped responding after a move. There's more than one break, and each gives its own symptom: connection refused, empty response, 502, 504. Find them in order, moving along the request path, and fix them so that from the outside the shop is reachable only through the proxy.
Works the same on Linux, macOS and WSL2, you need Docker with compose v2 and curl. Instructions:
labs/01-shop-after-move/README.md. Takes about 40 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
- How
127.0.0.1differs from0.0.0.0and what loopback is inside a container (the IP and ports lesson) - How
ports:in compose maps a host port into a container, the left and right side of the entry (the NAT and the IP and ports lessons) - How a name turns into an address and how to check that with
nslookup -type=a(the DNS lesson) - How connection refused (RST) differs from silence and from an empty response (the TCP and diagnostic tools lessons)
nc -zvto check a port andcurl -ito read the response code (the diagnostic tools lesson)- How 502 differs from 504 and where nginx logs the reason (the HTTP lesson, "Statuses" section)

Check what you remember
01 What does "L7 load balancer" mean?
02 Inside a Docker container, a service listens on 127.0.0.1:8080. Why can't the neighboring container see it?
03 Which DNS record makes one name an alias of another?
04 A client is authenticated, but has no permission for the action. Which HTTP status is the right one to return?
05 How does a 502 from an nginx proxy differ from a 504?
06 You need to check whether TCP port 5432 is open on a remote host, and psql isn't installed. What do you use?
07 ping to a server gives 100% loss, but the site on it opens fine in a browser. Why?
08 In what order do packets go during a TCP connection setup (three-way handshake)?
09 curl to a closed port instantly prints "Connection refused." What came back in response to the SYN?
10 What does a DNAT rule (port mapping) do on a router?
11 In what order does a client get an address via DHCP?
