Check: Linux, processes in depth
Quiz on the processes track. 5 questions, retakes allowed.
The module's final check. Seven questions covering the whole track: lifecycle, states, signals, zombies and orphans, daemons and background processes, and observation. After the questions comes a mini-project: on the application server several processes at once are misbehaving, and sorting them out takes everything you learned in the module.
How it's graded
The lesson is marked complete when all seven answers are correct. Get one wrong, click "Try again": as many attempts as you need. Progress is saved only once you finish the whole quiz.
Mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can actually do it. Since
this morning, server app-01 has been swamped with complaints: metrics aren't updating, the
space from a deleted log never came back, the process list keeps growing a tail of <defunct>
entries, and tonight's backup needs to be started by hand in a way that survives your session
dropping. You need to find the processes responsible, figure out what state they're in and which
signals they respond to, and clean things up. At the end you'll fill in a short incident report.
Works the same way on Linux, macOS, and WSL2, you only need Docker. Instructions:
labs/01-app-server-incident/README.md. Takes about 40 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
ps -eo pid, ppid, stat, argsand theSTATcolumn:S,T,Z(the lessons on lifecycle and states).kill -CONT,kill(that'sSIGTERM), andkill -9, the order "TERM first, then KILL" (the lesson on signals).- Where a zombie comes from, why
kill -9doesn't touch it, and who cleans up orphans (the lesson on zombies and orphans). nohuporsetsid, to make a process survive a session dropping (the lesson on daemons).ls -l /proc/<PID>/fdand the(deleted)tag: who's holding a deleted file (the lesson on observation).

Check what you remember
01 What's the difference between fork and exec?
02 What state is a process in when it's sleeping in uninterruptible I/O wait?
03 Which signals can't be caught, blocked, or ignored?
04 You sent a process kill 4321, and it keeps running. What most likely happened?
05 What keeps a zombie process in the system?
06 In a container, PID 1 is the application itself, and <defunct> processes are piling up in ps. What helps?
07 Why run a command through nohup?
