Check: Linux memory

Quiz on the memory track. 6 questions, retakes allowed.

Final check for the module. Six questions on three lessons of the track: virtual memory and pages, anonymous memory and page cache and swap and the OOM killer. After the questions comes a mini-project: work through a server where a service disappears, and size the memory limit by actual usage.

How it's graded

The lesson counts as passed once every answer is correct. If you get one wrong, hit "Retry": you get as many attempts as you want. Progress is only saved once you've passed the whole quiz.

Mini-project

The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can do it hands-on. The lab environment runs a "server" with three services, and one of them disappears without a trace in its own log. You need to find who's killing it and who's really eating the memory, then fix the container's limit so everything works without swap and without an oversized margin.

Works the same way on Linux, macOS and WSL2, you only need Docker. Instructions: labs/01-memory-incident/README.md. Takes about 40 minutes.

Check what you remember

01 What memory does a process see, and who translates its addresses into physical ones?

02 In ps output, a process's VSZ is noticeably bigger than its RSS. What does that mean?

03 free shows little free memory, but the system is working fine. Why?

04 What does the kernel move to swap?

05 How does the OOM killer pick which process to kill?

06 A supervisor logs that a service exited with code 137, and its own log is empty. What does that tell you?
