Check: Linux, filesystem deep dive
A quiz for the filesystem track. 5 questions, retake anytime.
Final check for the module. Seven questions covering every lesson in the track: file types, links, /proc and /sys, tmpfs, partitions and swap and RAID. After the questions comes a mini-project: a nightly job on a server has broken in several places at once, and fixing it takes everything from the whole module.
How it's graded
The lesson is complete once all seven answers are correct. If you get one wrong, click "Retry": you get unlimited attempts. Progress only saves once the quiz is passed in full.
Mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks what you can do by hand. On server
files-01, a nightly job called nightly collects uploads from /srv/inbox into one archive. Today it
didn't run, and yesterday's run looks like it's still hanging. You need to find and fix every cause: a
broken link to a config, an object in the upload directory that everything hangs on, an archive written
into memory, and hung processes. The last step is filling in a short incident report, which will also
include the state of the RAID array from a /proc/mdstat snapshot.
Works the same on Linux, macOS and WSL2, you just need Docker. Instructions:
labs/01-nightly-incident/README.md. Takes about 40 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
ls -land the first character of the line:-,d,l,p(the file types lesson).readlink, readlink -fand a relative path in a symlink;ln -sfnredirects a link;sed -ion a link's path replaces it with a regular file (the links lesson)./proc/<PID>/cmdlineand/proc/<PID>/fd: how to find a process and its open files withoutps;kill <PID>(the/procand/syslesson).df -h <directory>andfindmnt -T <directory>: which filesystem a directory sits on (the tmpfs lesson).- An array line in
/proc/mdstat, the(F)marker, the[n/m]counter, and how many failures a level tolerates (the RAID lesson).

Check what you remember
01 In ls -l output, a line starts with the character l. What file type is this?
02 How does a hard link differ from a symbolic link?
03 What is /proc?
04 dd writes to /var/cache/report and fails with No space left on device, while df -h / shows 30 GB free. What do you check first?
05 Why does /etc/fstab usually reference disks through UUID=... instead of /dev/sdb1?
06 Why does a system need swap?
07 Which RAID level survives one disk failure and needs at least three disks?
