Check: Linux boot
Quiz on the boot track. 5 questions, you can retake it.
Final check for the boot module. Five questions run through the chain in order: the sequence of links, disk layout, initramfs, systemd, and udev. After the questions comes a mini-project: a server didn't come back up after a reboot, and you need to walk the whole chain by its traces.
How it's graded
The lesson is complete when all five answers are correct. If you get one wrong, hit "Try again": you get as many attempts as you need. Progress is only saved once you've gone through the whole quiz.
Under each question is an explanation and a link to the module lesson where the topic is covered in depth.
Common mistakes
- Looking for the problem at the wrong link. If the log already shows
systemd[1], firmware, the bootloader, and initramfs have all done their job, and the root is mounted. - Assuming a disk is MBR just because of the
55 aasignature. It's also present in the protective MBR of a GPT disk. - Looking at the initramfs of the wrong kernel. After an update,
/bootholds several images, and the right one is identified byBOOT_IMAGEin the kernel command line. - Writing
/dev/sdXinto fstab. It works today, but after a disk is replaced or added, the names can change. - Editing
grub.cfgby hand. It's generated byupdate-gruborgrub2-mkconfigfrom/etc/default/grub, and a manual edit disappears on the next generation.
Module mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can apply
it to real files. Here's the scenario: on a database server, the disk under
/data was replaced, the server rebooted overnight, and it didn't come back
up. The on-call engineer attached its disk to a rescue system. You need to
find, from the console log, which link everything stalled on, work out the
disk's bytes and the initramfs image, then fix fstab and the default boot
target.
Everything happens in a container on your own machine and works the same on
Linux, macOS, and in WSL2. Instructions: labs/01-rescue-boot/README.md.
Takes about 30 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
- The chain firmware → bootloader → kernel → initramfs → systemd, and what each link looks like in the log: question 1, lesson 01.
- The layout of sector 0 and the GPT header signature, reading bytes with
od: question 2, lesson 02. - The kernel command line (
BOOT_IMAGE=,root=) fromgrub.cfgand the log: lesson 03. - The initramfs file list via
gzip -dc ... | cpio -t: question 3, lesson 04. default.targetas a link to a target, and emergency mode whenlocal-fs.targetfails: question 4, lesson 05./dev/disk/by-uuidand theUUID=entry in fstab: question 5, lesson 06.

Check what you remember
01 In what order do the stages of Linux boot run?
02 How many bytes does the MBR take up, and which part of it is reserved for the primary bootloader's code?
03 What is initramfs for?
04 What's true about booting through systemd?
05 What does udev do, and how does it relate to /dev?
