Check: Linux fundamentals
Six questions on processes, permissions, and pipes. Wraps up the first track.
Final check for the module. Six questions on three lessons: processes and signals, permissions and pipes and redirects. After the questions comes a mini-project: one night incident on a server, where you'll need everything from the module at once.
How it's graded
The lesson counts as passed once all six answers are correct. If you get one wrong, hit "Retry": you get as many attempts as you want. Progress is only saved once you've passed the whole quiz.
Under each question there's an explanation and a command you can use to check
the answer for yourself. The commands run a temporary ubuntu:24.04 container
(--rm removes it on exit), they don't touch your own system. All you need is
Docker running. The first run downloads the image, around 30 MB.
Common mistakes
- Starting with
kill -9. The process doesn't get the chance to flush data and clean up. Trykill PIDfirst, wait a few seconds, and only then-9. - Trying to kill a zombie. Look at
PPIDand deal with the parent. - Fixing
Permission deniedwithchmod 777. Find the real cause first: noxon the file or a folder along the path, noexecon the partition, the wrong owner. - Using
>where you need>>, and losing log history. - Writing
2>&1before the file:cmd 2>&1 > logleaves errors on the screen.
Mini-project for the module
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can do it with your own hands on a live system. The scenario: at night, a server runs out of disk space. You need to find what's eating it, stop the culprit so it has time to clean up after itself, free up space, fix permissions on the deploy script and the secret, and then run a deploy with a proper log.
Everything happens in a container on your own machine and works the same on
Linux, macOS and WSL2. Instructions: labs/01-night-shift/README.md. Takes
about 30 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
du,sort -h,ls -lS: find the biggest file (the lesson on working with the filesystem).ps,killand the difference between SIGTERM and SIGKILL: questions 1 and 2.chmod,chown,su: questions 3 and 4, the permissions lesson.>,>>,2>&1: questions 5 and 6, the lesson on pipes and redirects.

Check what you remember
01 How is SIGKILL (9) different from SIGTERM (15)?
02 What is a zombie process?
03 What do permissions 644 mean for a file?
04 A script with permissions 755 fails to run via ./script.sh and prints Permission denied. Which cause from the list is the real one?
05 How is > different from >> when redirecting into a file?
06 What does the command ./app > out.log 2>&1 do?
