Check: CI/CD
Seven questions on CI, Delivery vs Deployment, pipeline anatomy, and tools.
Final check for the module. Seven questions covering every lesson in the track: what CI/CD is, Continuous Integration, Delivery vs. Deployment, anatomy of a pipeline, tools and your first pipeline in GitLab CI. After the questions comes a mini-project: the pipeline of a small service, with mistakes from every lesson baked in at once.
How it's graded
The lesson is complete once all seven answers are correct. If you get one wrong, click "Retry": you get unlimited attempts. Progress only saves once the quiz is passed in full.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up Delivery and Deployment. There's one test question: does a human need to act for a version to reach production.
- Making tests "optional" (
|| true,allow_failureon tests). The pipeline turns green while a broken build keeps moving forward. - Tagging artifacts and images as
latest. A tag like that can't tell you what's in production right now, and a rollback turns into guesswork. - Putting a token in
.gitlab-ci.ymlor printing it to the log "for debugging".
Module mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks what you can actually do by hand. You've been
handed the pipeline of a greeter service that's "always green". The tests actually fail, but the pipeline
doesn't notice. The artifact is named latest, the deploy token sits right in the repository, and the
pipeline deploys to production on its own. You need to bring it up to a proper shape: tests stop the pipeline,
the artifact is tagged by commit, the token lives in CI variable storage, staging updates automatically, and
production only goes out on a manual command.
The pipeline runs in a clean python:3.12.7-alpine container, and a small runner script plays the role of
GitLab. You need Docker and Git, it works on Linux, macOS and WSL2. Instructions:
labs/01-ship-greeter/README.md. Takes about 30 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
- reading a pipeline log: which job failed and why (lesson 1)
- the rule "red tests stop the pipeline" (lesson 2)
- separating staging and production, a manual step before prod (lesson 3)
- the artifact, variable storage and masking secrets, environments (lesson 4)
- a tag by commit instead of
latest, theCI_COMMIT_SHORT_SHAvariable (lesson 6) git add,git commit: the runner, like a real CI, only picks up what's committed
