Check: backups
Nine questions on RPO and RTO, the 3-2-1 rule, snapshots, RAID, PITR, and restic. You can retake it.
The module's final check. Nine questions covering the whole track: mechanisms that aren't a backup, RPO and RTO, the 3-2-1 rule, backup types, snapshots, RAID, databases, and restic. After the questions comes a mini-project: a night incident at a shop, where you'll need everything from the module at once.
How it's graded
The lesson is marked complete when all nine answers are correct. Get one wrong, click "Try again": as many attempts as you need. Progress is saved only once you finish the whole quiz.
Each question has an explanation below it. Questions 5 and 8 also come with commands you can use to
check the answer yourself. They run a temporary restic/restic:0.19.1 container (--rm removes it
on exit), your own system stays untouched. You just need Docker running.
Common mistakes
- Treating RAID or a replica as a backup. Both faithfully repeat a deletion and a ransomware encryption.
- Trusting a "done" log entry. A script without
set -ewrites it even after a failedpg_dump, while an empty file goes into the repository. - Counting RPO from the schedule instead of from the last working copy.
- Verifying a copy with only
restic check. It checks the repository's integrity, not whether a working dump is actually inside. - Running
forgetwithout--hostin a shared repository: the rule will also apply to other servers' snapshots.
The module's mini-project
The quiz checks what you remember. The mini-project checks that you can actually do it. The scenario: during the day a migration wiped the orders table, and the nightly backup script wrote "done" every night. You need to find a copy you can trust, work out how many hours of work were lost, verify the dump in a separate database, bring the orders back, and fix the script so it stops on error and leaves other servers' snapshots alone.
Everything happens in a container on your own machine and works the same way on Linux, macOS, and
WSL2. Instructions: labs/01-night-restore/README.md. Takes about 40 minutes.
What you'll need for the tasks
- Counting the real loss from the last working copy: question 2 and the lesson RPO and RTO.
createdb,pg_restore, counting rows after a restore: the lesson Backing up databases.restic snapshots, restic ls,restic restore --target,forgetwith--host: question 8 and the lesson restic in practice.set -ein a shell script: stops the script on the first command that fails.

Check what you remember
01 A server is built on RAID 6, the disks are intact. An engineer ran DROP TABLE on the wrong database. What does the array give you?
02 Backups run once a day at 03:00. An incident happens at 14:00. What RPO is actually achieved?
03 What does the "zero" mean in the 3-2-1-1-0 scheme?
04 What's the difference between an incremental and a differential backup?
05 Why does long retention cost little with deduplicating tools like restic and borg?
06 An LVM snapshot is taken on a live volume holding a database. Which statement is true?
07 What do you need to restore Postgres to the state one minute before an accidental DELETE?
08 restic forget --keep-last 2 --prune run on a repository with four snapshots left all four in place. Why?
09 A Postgres replica sits in another availability zone. What does it NOT protect against?
